Dutch settlers

"Kill" is Dutch for "stream".

The Dutch settled the Hudson Valley and the area on and near Long Island, including bits of what is now New Jersey and Pennsylvania, before the British took it over.

Lots of fun facts on the origins of unusual place names in that region can be found here, archived by the Dutch Embassy.
