Obviously, he was a grave danger to himself.
He was an idiot leading other idiots. A human being is a dangerous creature, even if it's an idiot.
For instance, idiots may or may not be smarter than a monkey- but they one advantage over monkeys- they can fairly easily pass themselves off as humans.
Anyone who thinks that murder will get them to paradise is an idiot. Anyone who thinks terrorism will bring about some ideal society is an idiot.
Now, you could claim that Zarqawi didn't actually believe this stuff, but that he was simply interested in gaining power and fame in a way that he was able to do this [he knew his limitation]. But anyone who wants to lead a bunch of idiots is an idiot.
