Anarchists and Jihadists

We should not overlook the differences either. Anarchism was an intellectual movement born as a radical response to the excesses and abuses of 19th century Capitalism, but it was not primarily a proletarian movement, and had roots in intellectual and Bohemian circles. Anarchists were not all moustachiod bomb-throwing radicals, most, like my namesake and his famous contemporary and fellow geographer, Pyotr
Kropotkin (a Russian aristocrat), were intellectuals who did most of their fighting with pen and prinitng press. Both, by the way, were respected academics in there own time in their field. Although some anarchists were undoubtedly saboteurs and terrorists, that image of the anarchist was to a great extent formed by a hostile press. The bulk of them, like modern day libertarians, with which they share much in common, were more theoretical than theatrical. Most important, anarchists were not religiously motivated.

Jihadism, on the other hand, has roots that go far beyond the Muslim Brotherhood, and can be traced to the paroxysms of Muslim expansionism and Arab nationalism that periodically sweep through the Islamic world, starting with Mohammed (PBUH) himself. Before the rise of European civilization after the middle ages, the Islamic civilization of the mideast and North Africa was a great organized threat to the West, driven not only by religious fervor, but by a highly advanced culture and a very organized civilization. This civilization was stopped militarily in Spain, Vienna and at sea at Lepanto, and European civilization has been on the ascendancy ever since. It's only been about 400 years since Islamic/Ottoman culture was defeated and the memory is still fresh in their minds. These are not illiterate tribesmen, but a civilization with a very consistent and well-documented history that goes back a millenium and a half. To them, the rise of the west has been a historical abberation that must be corrected. I over-generalize, of course, most Muslims are no more jihadists than Europeans are crusaders, but the thread can be followed that far back.
