Last year, a Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court wrote that "a democracy must fight with one hand tied behind its back", and this is one aspect of what he meant. A free society has a free press, and if that complicates life for the politicians, tough. It's no different than insisting that prosecutors follow the law even if it means they have to work harder, and sometimes the guilty go free. Life in a free society is generally more work than life in a tyranny; choices complicate things. Thank god for that.
