"Sure, we're concerned about nuclear power plant wastes, too. But this is a technical problem with technical solutions. In fact, the solutions already are available and are being successfully implemented.
We can dissolve the spent fuel elements in acid and chemically extract the unconsumed Uranium and recycle it for additional power generation. The same can be done with the Plutonium the reactor produces. The hazardous fission products are then removed and they are stabilized in glass blocks which, although highly radioactive, are very stable and can be stored in salt mines or other geologically stable structures where they will not pose a threat to anyone. They cannot, repeat, cannot explode. The government of France is already doing this, on an industrial scale and gaining valuable revenue from processing the nuclear wastes from other nations.
"Besides, the fission products are a valuable resource, not waste! Did you know that ALL the radioactive isotopes used in industry, agriculture, science and medicine are produced in nuclear reactors? These are valuable materials and just one more side benefit of nuclear power. Maybe we shouldn't just be throwing them away. We like to see this not as a problem, but as an opportunity!"
