Take hostages at will was the message Carter sent. We'll bend over backwards to get them back. And when the going really gets rough, the USA will cut and run leaving a vacuum that the radical Islamic militants can capitalize on.
Iran took the message, sent out Hezbolla and other emissaries of Islamic militarism and terrorism, and the world has been haunted by the most radical forms of Islam ever since.
