re: SF Hits & Misses

I think the SF idea of implants has limited appeal. There are cosmetic implants, but I'm not talking about those. The closest I think we might come to it in the near future (10-20 years) are wearable computers. Even those might not catch on in their current form. What might happen is that people will have home PCs like they do now. And they will be connected to the internet like they are now. The "wearable" might come in the form of a wi-fi gadget built into the collars of t-shirts or other clothing allowing people to be in constant contact with their home PC. Anything else might be too bulky. The wi-fi gadget would provide 'access' to more computing power than can be easily powered by wearable batteries. One could pipe all sorts of stuff back and forth without carrying anything more cumbersome than a blackberry-type device that displays pixel data. It might even be solar powered since it wouldn't need a wall socket power source. Some people might go for piercings as a form of computer implant. An nose stud might hold the hardware for a head-up display, an ear piercing might contain a cell-phone, and an eyebrow-piercing might be an infrared camera that allows people to see at night without street lighting. But the technology isn't there yet.

And why are computers the only source for inspiration for futuristic technologies? I agree it's because they're cheap, and that means they are likely to affect everyone, not just some secret covert ops project.
