re: SF Hits & Misses

* Manned spaceflight to the planets, moonbases

Sad to say this seems to be going nowhere fast. Maybe by the end of this century we will have the moon base and there is always the political footprint missions but until money is found out there, no reason to be optimistic.

* Nuclear Fusion power

Got to happen sooner or later I guess but I haven't heard anything promising for a long time

* A population explosion greatly impacting society

Population has more than doubled in my lifetime and it is relatively unnoticable except for traffic jams. No Antartica colonies anticipated.

* Limited or Worldwide Nuclear War (Thank God)

Yes

* Robots

I think we will see a lot of home appliance type robots in this century and some care giving functions for elderly and children may be possible. I do see the possibility of robot transportation (programmable cars). I also expect a lot of robot innovation into military hardware

No adroids on the horizon.

* AI

Who knows? I doubt it in this century but it may happen

* Flying Cars

I think, never but that's a long time.

* Cure for cancer

This has bee 20 years away since I was old enough to listen to adults talk. I have high expectation for all the genetic stuff so we should make it happen in this century for sure.

* Contact with or detection of aliens

This and neos are impossible to predict.

* Substantive lifespan extension

With genetics and stem cell research a healthy 120-130 years should be attainable relatively soon, surely in this century. For really substantive extention we will have to completely figure out the human brain. Then we just rejuv into a new body based on our old body with optional enhancements.
