Of course Hansen had it pretty easy in comparison to the other author, as
he had exclusive access to Armstrong and other close folk.
And maybe he didn't dream about going to the Moon as a kid, but this little
tidbit was interesting.
Quoting from here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_11
On September 16, 1962, the date Armstrong's selection as an astronaut was announced, his parents were flown to New York to appear on the television game show I've Got A Secret.
After their secret was guessed, host Garry Moore commented "Wouldn't it be something if your son were the first man on the Moon?"
The episode has been shown on Game Show Network, although Armstrong himself never saw it until his biographer brought him a copy of the tape.
And according to Andrew Chaikin in Man on the Moon, Gus Grissom was actually
considered for the honor of being the first human on Luna until his untimely death
aboard Apollo 1 in 1967.
A question for the Zone:
Do you think US space exploration was hampered by Armstrong's lack of publicizing
space (unlike Buzz Aldrin), or would it not have made much of a difference? And by
hampered I mean we didn't get the Moon and Mars bases and who knows what else
we were once tantalized with happening by now.
