re: The Lubbock Lights
An alternative explanation for the Lubbock lights was a squadron of fighters in close formation refueling from a tanker, their planes illuminated by floodlights (it was a training mission for student pilots).
My guideline: unless you see a porthole with a weird life-form waving at you from within, it probably has a conventional explanation.
