I saw a BBC documentary about Pluto and Dave Jewitt (who discovered the first KBOs with Jane Luu) knew way back in 1992 that Pluto would have to be classified as a KBO instead of a planet.
I also remember various articles in Astronomy magazine, back then.
This isn't at all recent.
