John Young was a hero to many space nuts but now it is a lot clearer why the TFNGs had a problem with him (and Abbey, but that was known). Young had some difficulty communicating, too.
I don't remember CNN showing anything of STS 27 except launch and landing. Had MCC known exactly what the extend of the tile damages was, we would have been informed. I had no idea (until this book) the astronauts knew they had a serious case of damaged tiles, before they landed.
I also learned Mike didn't strap himself at the middeck, for re-entry (on STS 27) until very late during re-entry.
And the Challenger astronauts (STS 51L) didn't go through 25Gs at the moment of rupture (as was written somewhere), but much less!
