I had the same resistance to reading the book that Robert did and finally bought it at a Barnes & Noble excess inventory table for $4.95 (OK, I'm Scottish).
Robert's review is spot on...how his fighter jock, obnoxious but entertaining character evolved after having to work with women. He pissed off Sally Ride on the 1st day of work telling a tits joke and she never spoke to him for 10 years afterward (he exaggerated). The guy did develop a serious case of the hots for Judy Resnick. Shows good taste in my book.
Entertaining from the 1st page on. No dull spots. Mullane and I both had the identical reaction to the challenge of a colonoscopy. I think we're quantum entangled twins in some perverse personal aspects.

I too, LOVED Mullane's "Riding Rockets"
