If you ask before you buy your ticket, you should be able to avoid that.
They don't all do it.
And I doubt that, from Fairbanks, you'll be taking any day trips to Canada. ;)
I really liked Fairbanks. It has a small-town character, for a major city. Actually, almost a frontier town character, though of course there's indoor plumbing and modern medicine. And electricity, even in the parking meters. Plugs hang out of them for people to plug their cars into during the looooong winter to keep the engine blocks from freezing.
I hope you go in summer. If you go over solstice, you'll have to tell me whether they still have 24-hour daylight baseball.
