The thruster works by the microwaves bouncing back and forth within the waveguide. In a symmetrical configuration this wouldn't produce a net thrust, but via a trick of relativity Shawyer has created an asymmetrical wave pattern that creates a net thrust - the higher the number of reflections, the Q factor, the higher the thrust.
