We're already radiating a lot of weird noise into space.

An interesting point on that: As communication gets more efficient, the "noise" radiated into space should actually go down. The period of time a civilization is "noisy" in the radio frequencies may actually be quite short.

Not sure I really want to catch the attention of anyone out there.

"Hey, you guys...we got GOLD over here!" --scientific attempt by ancient Incas to communicate with the Gods Over The Sea.
