There are, according to most sources I've seen, an average of about 2000 insurgent attacks on coalition forces per month. It doesn't seem too much of a reach that two or three Iraqis are killed in response to each attack on average, which would produce the 5000 per month figure.
The situation in Iraq is unbelieveable, I'll give you that - but it's real.
