What it says to me is that we're too flipping stupid to be able to figure out when an employee is impaired by drugs and alcohol during their working hours.
I don't know about the experiences the rest of you have had but it was always absolutely clear which employees around me had drug problems. You could see it in the quality of their work, their miserable attendance, and often the physical signs were obvious.
What random drug testing does is for the most part is catch the occasional pot smoker since it's the one drug that tends to stay in the body the longest. Often it's a complete surprise when one of these folks gets nailed. They generally don't smoke for work. Since pot doesn't create the horrific day after like alcohol, often their attendance is good. I've often found the workers that occasionally indulge to be more creative and that they get along well with their coworkers.
Random testing is a horrific precedence we've allowed ourselves to be subject to. I think it's time to start standing up to the insurance industry.

Random drug testing is an admission of failure
