The French and Vietnam
Interesting history. The US forgets the Iranians hate us for overthrowing a democracy and installing a dictator. We also trained the SAVAK, a brutal secret service similar to the Gestapo.
However, a little known reality is that the French were US agents in Vietnam. The US supplied weapons, uniforms and the payroll. The French had "entre", as Vietnam had been their colony.
After becoming involved directly, the US and South Vietnam cancelled proposed elections regarding unification because they knew the North would win.
