I think it's BS.
The main problem with oil shale has not been extracting the oil from the earth, but extracting the earth from the ground. It requires a strip mining, which is the utter destruction of the environment where it takes place. So whatever their chemical process, which wasn't described in a believable manner, it doesn't matter because there is no environmentally friendly way of doing it (strip mining).
