I mean we are seriously entrenched in a car culture

There are whole sections of the city where I live that are inaccessible by bus, nearly as bad as rural countryside. If you don't have a car you can't get near them unless you want to walk for 20-30 minutes. A bike would be suitable but they are too far from most industrial centers and shopping centers as well, so a bike doesn't help much either. You can see it from orbit, these twisting crescent neighborhoods look like stripped worm-eaten wood, with these dead-end streets like grooves curving this way and that, eating a maze of pathways, maximizing the distance one has to travel to get anywhere. They're semi-sheltered like that, hard to reach, and I understand why people who own cars might like to live there. But in 50 years houses in these neighborhoods might be worthless, maybe sooner. And taxpayers will end up paying for their demolition after their owners, strapped for gas money sell their cars and have to move, then can't find buyers for their car-culture homes and default on their mortgages.

Of course I'll be old by then, so maybe I shouldn't bother ranting about it. Forward thinking never helps.
