Rates, risk, and priorities

Objectively, one might quibble with your figures - you may be high by an order of magnitude or two. Nonetheless, the fact is that impact events are implicated in the complete overturn of the Earth's ecosystems some 65 million years ago. The loss of all humanity in a single cataclysm would be, so to speak, a real bummer. Lesser events would "merely" be a great tragedy.

When looked at compared to other haards worldwide (Automobile accidents, wars, industrial injuries and deaths, disease, pollution, Global climate change, etc.), this is not top of the list, but SOMEBODY should be looking at it, and rocking the boat to make sure it remains on the radar screen.

Just remember to keep the debate civil, even if people seem to be ignoring what is, to you, an important issue.
