I've always had a hard time with the concept of a Omnipotent God who lets horrible things happen. Two songs that I sang many times in Sunday School were All Things Bright and Beautiful and God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall, and with a child's mind I thought such a God would surely not let any harm or hurt come to anyone. But I soon learned otherwise. My dog getting a snout full of porcupine quills was one of my first clues.
The standard responses seem to be that "God works in mysterious ways" or "These things were sent to try us/ teach us a fundamental lesson", but I never felt them to be satisfactory. What lessons can three year old with cancer be learning? Or a five year old dying of malnutrition? What good ends can God be planning when he steals a loved one bit by bit with Alzheimers?
I guess it may make bad things easier to bear if one believes there is someone somewhere with a master plan, but it doesn't work for me.
