I was surfing in Galveston back in High school. Yes, you can sometimes surf in Galveston, but it usually takes an hour or so of bad waves to catch one good wave. The problem is that usually when the waves are big enough to surf on, they were caused by a storm, and that means they are choppy. But this day they were coming in clean sets.
I was out there when a fin broke a few feet from me. “Shark!†was my first thought, and I was scared. It looked to be the size of a tiger shark fin, or so I thought. Then another one surfaced. Seconds later I saw a jump out of a wave. I realized there was a small group of porpoise playing in the surf around me.
So I got to surf with the porpoises. It was an amazing experience.
It doesn’t happen often, but I still see them from time to time playing in the surf at Galveston.
Surf one for me, my sleek gray friends.
