yep, not random at all

Elephants apparently recognize themselves in mirrors, and if this report can be believed, one of them has even painted a self-portrait:

.. which is light-years ahead of those other paintings, so skepticism could be wise:

Elephant expert Dr Joyce Poole, who has studied the animals for 30 years, said she owned an elephant painting but had not come across animals painting their own images.

The Oslo-based scientist said: "I have seen elephants painting, but it was very free-flow.

"It's certainly capable of drawing an elephant, and could be trained, but might not really understand what it was doing."

.. anyway bottom line is they're smart and sentient, and their trunks are great manipulators. (They like playing xylophone too.) - So that could make their kind of intelligence somewhat closer to ours than whales or dolphins, which don't have hands, trunks, or whatever. (Unless they're doing other transformative things unknown to us, with their sonar)
