All the more reason to build robust spacecraft.

If Man is going to spread out into the solar system and beyond, then the journey can not be done on the cheap. True spacecraft are going to have to be built which can protect people from radiation. Leave capsules like Soyuz and the CEV in LEO, but build solid craft with hulls several centimeters thick for deep space missions. This of course means constructing a large space station in orbit to act as a shipyard and home port.
