Just a quick note for now before I need to dash: all that (in your post) is very well and true as far as it goes. But I was referring to those insights and revelations which precede those regulations and laws, whether of Abraham, or Moses, or (fill in your favorite mystic's name here). I'm making a distinction between these revelations, and the science of their day (such as it was). I'm saying that despite our advanced science, these guys could well have been onto something clearly real but transcendent, which for some reason was more visible to them than it is to us, in modern times.
For me the nearest 'prophetic mystics' of modern times would be composers like Beethoven, and maybe Mahler and a few others. There would of course, be literary equivalents too.
