No argument here. I too have been surprised and disappointed at
people who claim that because in the 10 billion year history of the
Milky Way galaxy no one has bothered to contact us in the 50-odd
years we have been searching - mostly sporadically and with only
a few methods - they must therefore not exist.
It was just a blink of an eye ago that the authorities stopped
burning people at the stake for wondering if other planets had
life, or that even other worlds existed and that the stars were
other Suns, for that matter. And now that we have spent the
last few microseconds of human history looking up and wondering
somewhat earnestly about other minds out there and that no one
in all those fractions of a second has paid us a call, we think we
are all there is. A real step back, in my opinion. Hopefully it is
just a bump in the road to true knowledge and progress based
on the amazing impatience of a species that lives maybe 80
years individually on average.
When we start really exploring the stars and finding no evidence
for ETI, then we can seriously start talking about being the top of
the cosmic intellectual heap, that the Universe was made just for
us (but why so much of it?), that we can start converting the
planets around 55 Cancri into private homes for the ultra-rich, etc.
