Hi Hank -
A study was done back in the year 2001 by a group of engineers at NASA Langley comparing space based systems with Moon based ones.
It turns out that using Moon based detectors rather than space based ones gives 6 months additional warning of inbound comets, like the ones responsible for most of the major extinctions on the Earth, including the end of the dinosaurs.
Further, small comet fragments, like the one that hit at Tunguska, are too dark to be seen in time with passive space based telescopes. That means using radar or lidar, and while you can't build those systems in free space, you can on the Moon.
Do you really want to rely on the second best system to keep man from goinf the way of the dinosaurs?

- 3 out of 4 18-24 year olds oppose spending money on sending men to Mars
- Actually that general apathy in the actual youth holds true for all things science and manned Lunar missions as well.
- NASA can't explain why we need a lunar colony
