Ok, your comment made me think about this in a new way.
The only solution I can think of to have the girls save his life and still get the guy is that they shared the same timeline until the point of his death where a new timeline was created in which he didn't get hit by the bus. Then on the anniversary of the death when she writes the note, she jumps to that same timeline.
