Can't there be a way to avoid having to rely on beliefs in science?

Why not apply critical thinking about science, explain facts, why this is older than that (for instance what's underneath is generally older than what's on top), and argue with facts, so no need for "beliefs" and even admit it might not be the truth, but that nothing else can explain better what we see...
