Hmm - I may be clueless, but here is what I do know:
I know that a close friend in the US who had good medical coverage and who was having chest pains was afraid to go to the doctor in case it was a heart attack, in which case her insurance would no longer have provided adequate coverage should she later get cancer or some other disease.
I know that a retired couple we know in Oregon are paying a huge chunk of their modest income to medical insurance premiums. I know that they can get a year's supply of some of their prescription medications in Canada for less than a month's supply costs at home, even after paying for a visit to a Canadian doctor.
I know that if I'm sick, or if I were to break a leg, I go to my doctor or to any ER in the country and get treated without worrying about how much it's going to cost.
I know that a friend who has schizophrenia and is on welfare is getting both his knee joints replaced, and isn't worried sick about the cost.
I know that there are fewer CT and MRI scanners per capita in Canada than in the US, but I also know that patients arean't sent for an expensive MRI scan when they have the sniffles, just because they have good insurance.
I know that the system in Canada is not perfect by any means - wait lists for a lot of procedures are too long - but I think it is a lot better than the US system.
I know that this reply is buried at the bottom of the pile, but I had to vent.
