Why have security forces gotten so jumpy? - all the real terrorists have serious money and don't bother with public transport. In Australia the Government sold itself via "border security", trading in peoples' fear of "terrorists" supposedly posing as refugees. Hah! Terrorists in the West have either had all the right documents (think al-Qaida money paying for visas and flying lessons) or have been home-grown. No one would plan to pose as refugees to achieve terrorist goals.

Relevance to space science? While Governments keep selling us the snake-oil of "homeland security" (think Vietnam and "the Domino effect") buckets of money get dumped on the military and stupid wars. Space science gets it in the neck.
