A brutal dictatorship holding a country together replaced with a more brutal occupation not even holding it together? At that cost?

How did we go from $50 or $60 billion to trillion(s) when it's all been GOOD NEWS? Going according to plan? With the insurgency in it's death throes? "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"?
