Everyone knows the 'spotted owl' was a legal tool(*). The ultimate justification was to save some of the last old-growth temperate rainforest in America. Sorry, but thats worth a few jobs.

*: I really don't know if the spotted was a species, a subspecies or just even a 'breed', and I make no solid claims either way.
