A matter of importance

Have you ever watched a movie where one of the characters is looking through binoculars? They show you on the screen what the character sees, and it always is two overlapping circles in a filed of of black, like an infinity symbol-shaped window cut into the fabric of space-time. Why is that? I've never owned a pair of binoculars that shows that, I've alays seen a circular field with the image inside it.

Haven't the filmmakers ever owned a pair of binoculars? Do they think no one in their audience has ever owned a pair of binoculars? Do they think their audience is so ignorant and backward and provincial that at least once once in their life they didn't have an opportunity to look through a pair of field glasses?

While I'm on the subject, have you ever heard gunfire in a movie? It doesn't sound anything at all like gunfire, does it? C'mon, this is America, everyone knows what gunfire sounds like, and the auditory simulation we get from Hollywood is nothing like the real thing. War movies, even documentaries are really bad about this. You watch the torpedo, or artillery
shell, or airplane bomb strike a target several miles away and you hear the explosion at the same instant you see it. Who do they think they're fooling? Everyone knows that the thunder from distant lightning is always a little late getting to you, and why that is so. Whey do they lie to us like that? Do they think we're that dumb?

Have you ever noticed how real people riding horses look different than people in the movies riding horses? I've never been on a horse in my life but I have seen people riding them, and it never looks as elegant and smooth as it does in Westerns. Same with fist fights, real fights don't look anything at all like movie fights. Brawls in bars are not funny, they are terrifying, especially if you are one of the participants. I've never witnessed a sword fight, knife fight or a gun fight, but I have a feeling they're nothing like what you get on film. Now, I have fired an automatic weapon, and I know it's a totally different experience than what the movies lead you to believe. Just for starters, it runs out of ammo almost as soon as you get started. Submachine guns are great for killing a guy in a phone booth, or cowering in a foxhole, but you're not going to mow down a platoon of advancing infantry with one. They used like a shotgun, not a fire hose. And no one ever, EVER, pulls a grenade pin out with his teeth. I've never been in combat either, so I don't know how well Hollywood does it, but I've seen people get severely injured in accidents and they don't act at all like guys wounded in movie battles. This is a particularly evil lie...

And what about all those things we learn how to do by first watching it on film or TV, like smoking a cigarette, or eyeballing a poker hand, or handling a firearm, or kissing a girl? The mind boggles.
