The latest court case on defining the relevancy of the Second Amendment to modern gun contrrol laws has re-opened this debate once again. This time it looks like it might go all the way to the Supreme Court.
Does anyone here actually know what the framers of the Constitution really meant when they spoke of militias and bearing arms? Were early American militias armed by the state, or were the soldiers expected to provide their own weapons? How did 18th century citizens feel about carrying loaded firearms around in town? At any rate, why should nit-picking about two century old definitions and terminology have any relevance to the situation today? The founding fathers were clever and honorable men, but they did not speak with the authority of god. This unseemly desire to try and determine what they were thinking, what they really meant, I find disturbing.
I propose a practical definition and solution to the problem. Make guns illegal in public, out on in the street, in every situation and place except in your house, business, or your own personal property. When transporting a gun, say to a legitimate use such as a shooting range or a sporting activity, it must be unloaded and dismantled. This should get guns off the street and give police the tools to crack down on anyone carrying a firearm, but still provide the individual citizen the right to protect his life, property and family with deadly force.
