How do we detect objects more than 50 AU distant from the Sun?

Wasn't there an idea to detonate a bunch of nukes to illuminate them, like a flashbulb, then have telescopes detect the reflected light?

Wouldn't lasers give even more intense illumination, like a spotlight sweeping the sky?
