It was one the first 'true-to-science" flicks, unlike many of the "Monster or the Week", or "Nuclear War Will Mutate Us ALL!" 50's flicks.

Yes it had the obligitory Monster, damsel in distress and Noble Captain Hero.

But the Monster wasn't the central character of the movie.
