re: a Talmudic scholar.. nu?

It happens to be true that strict Orthodox and Conservative Jews will eschew corn products during Passover. Especially to the Ashkenazim (northern/eastern Europe, speakers of Yiddish), any grain could possibly contain a microscopic trace of leaven... better to avoid.

[The Sepharadim -- descended from the Jews expelled from Spain, Portugal, and other Inquisitions, who speak Ladino -- permit rice during Passover. I side with them, permitting me a starch other than potato.]

Talmud, it has been said innumerable times, is a "fence around Torah", meaning if you follow the expanded laws expounded in Talmud (and other expositions derived from it, such as the Shulchan Aruch*), you can feel safe that you have not transgressed any of the 613 mitzvot (commandments).

On the other hand (as Tevye often said), burning a corn product is not the same as eating one, and the eating is what counts.

[* - Appropriately enough for Passover, Shulchan Aruch -- lit. "set table" -- is the heading for the portion of the Seder devoted to the actual meal.]
