Accidents happen
A lot of people talk about the "wrathful Old Testament God" as if all (s)he ever did was punish transgressors. Granted, there are a couple of outstanding examples of wrath, notably in the same book (Exodus) whose earlier chapters are re-told during this 8-day week... but it really doesn't work like that. Not in Judaism, anyway.
There is no punishment for breaking the Passover -- or for otherwise not keeping kosher. Any atonement and forgiveness to be negotiated between one's self and the Deity is reserved for Yom Kippur.
