Women are not counted because they didn't count. They were considered extensions of the important men in their lives. Why do you think Elizabeth I didn't marry?
How many cut their hair and enlisted, keeping their gender secret? How many ventured out on the battlefield armed with nothing but bandages? How many obtained valuable intelligence as spies?
How many held their homes and businesses together while their husbands were off at war?
How many built farms and brought in the crops? How many educated the children in their communities? How many worked in the factories?
How many did all this while told they weren't considered responsible enough to own property in their own names or to vote?
How many did all this while pregnant or nursing?
It's true what they say, you know: Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels.
