ISIS didn't pick a fight with us, it was the other way round.
We went to war with ISIS because they threatened to undo what we had been fighting and dying for in the MidEast for over a decade. In other words, we attacked them to save face.
Don't get me wrong, these people are bloodthirsty barbarians and deserve to be exterminated, and they do pose a threat to the region and the world, and to us. But they are the result of a foreign entanglement we chose to get involved in, and one which we apparently can't untangle ourselves from. And even if we defeat them, the only way we can prevent the successor to ISIS (can you argue they are the last of their kind?) is to stay in the MidEast forever, playing ghetto cop.
This is precisely what Obama was trying to avoid by getting us out of that part of the world once and for all, but at the last minute he lost his nerve.
