re: Let me understand you.

Your post listed the errors of the Bush administration:

The Bush Administration's refusal to devote the military assests necessary to "win" this struggle, the disbanding of the civil infrastructure (a cardinal sin if one wants stability), the discrimination against Sunnis, the throwing out of the Baathists have lead to failure and defeat.

My response was simply to ask the obvious question about not committing those errors:

What do you think would be happening in Iraq right now if, as per your advice, the Sunnis and Baathists had been simply allowed to keep all their power, ministries, control of the military, and all the rest?

All I asked was for some speculation on what the results would have been if we HAD kept Saddam's Sunni authorities in power. I realize that this requires a series of "If-Then" speculations, something that seems to be anathema around here, but none of the steps are difficult ones.

Of course it does help if you also know about the former military structure in Iraq, modeled after the Soviet style, compared to the way they're trying to reorganize the military now. It helps if you know who the former ministers of various departments were and what their loyalties were. It helps if you understand that simply replacing one authoritarian monolith with another one may get the electricity on faster (in Baghdad, the only place that was getting reliable electricity before the war) but doesn't solve the basic problems that raised Saddam to power in the first place. In fact, it helps if you know a lot of things other than what you read in MSNBC.
