Human output barely cracked 1 billion metric tons until 1945. Keep that 1 billion metric tons in mind, and look at what the natural cycle was doing all that time:

Sinking in yet? If that graphic and the +3.2 number is accurate, human emissions didn't even start overrunning the natural sinks until the 1970s.
