Sphere of Influence

If Earth was alone in a void then what you said would be strictly correct, but as you well know two objects orbitting the sun act as though there's a distinct "Sphere of Influence" around the larger of the two orbitting masses. The dividing surface between the Earth's and the Sun's dominance is more of a permeable membrane, but it's real enough.
