When we pull out, Iran goes in. Not only will we have lost IN Iraq; we will have lost Iraq and any hope of future ties. And don't expect oil prices to go down.
I never wanted us in Iraq; I believed it was ill-conceived to begin with and based on nothing but lies and what ifs. Once there, between Rummy and yes-men Generals, the war was ill-planned and poorly implemented. They couldn't have been any more incompetent. They could have pulled it out once, a long time ago, but that time has passed. Now, we're facing an Iraq that will be unstable, possibly become an Iranian puppet, a training ground for Al Quaeda, and what happens to the Kurds who have been supportive (granted, for their own reasons)? The Turks may well invade that area when we're gone, further complicating things. The only answer they're going to come up with is to cut Iraq up into thirds and there's not any of them going to be happy about that. The Sunnis don't have the oil.
And at the end of it, all of our political capital in the international community has been spent. Gordon Brown will not likely be as amenable as Tony Blair.
We're just plain S.O.L. Thank you, Mr. Bush for managing to drag the face of the United States of America in the dirt in just a few years. I'm not sure we'll recover from this fiasco.
