One way to look at "life" is as an agent to ACCELERATE the breakdown of things around it, and so to increase entropy quicker than in the absence of life. The existence of a small "standing wave" of order, in the process of accelerating disorder is an "acceptable" price to pay to accelerate the rundown of the rest of the ordered Universe.
