That is what Conservatives are always claiming Liberals believe.
Some people are better off than others because they ARE smarter, harder-working, luckier, or some combination of those. That is perfectly normal and natural, and I doubt there is much anyone could, or should, do about it.
What Liberals believe is that the prosperous should not use their resources to deny opportunity to others. In other words, to buy elections, bribe politicians, suborn judges, lobby legislatures, pervert the free market or control the press. In other words, they should not use their money and power to rig the game so they get to keep their money and power, or deny anyone else the ability to compete fairly.
I don't think that's too much to ask. In fact, I think that is what I would call "liberty". And the fact so many Conservatives find this attitude threatening is all the evidence I need that maybe they are not as convinced of the righteousness of their cause as they claim to be.
No one is saying everyone should have exactly the same.
