I spent some time poking around Newt's Web site, American Solutions. Classic Newt, classically RightWing radical, including "Rediscovering God in America" to appeal to the religious Right. I found some of it repugnant, some of it dogmatically silly, and some of it reasonable. Bottom line: in the Grand Scheme Of Things, I'd rather have Newt as President than any of the GOP's machine hacks. To rank my preferences, I'd say (at the moment), Gore first, Gingrich second, Democratic Party hacks third, Republican party hacks last. My utopian vision of an indepedent race between Gore and Gingrich seems a bit more realistic after the update on Newt's recent activities. The man's still a player in American politics.
